Śaunaka said: At the snake-sacrifice of the wise king Janamejaya of the Pāṇḍava lineage, who were the supreme riṣi-s who acted as sacrificial priests?
शौनक ने कहा: पांडव वंश के बुद्धिमान राजा जनमेजय के सर्प-यज्ञ में, सर्वोच्च ऋषि कौन थे जिन्होंने यज्ञ पुरोहित के रूप में कार्य किया?
Who were the sadasya-s at that terrible snake-sacrifice that brought great fear and misery to the snakes?
उस भयानक सर्प-यज्ञ में सदस्य कौन थे जिससे साँपों को अत्यधिक भय और कष्ट हुआ?

O son! You should describe this in detail. O son of a sūta! We should know about those who knew the secrets of the snake-sacrifice.
हे वत्स आपको इसका विस्तार से वर्णन करना चाहिए. हे सूतपुत्र! हमें उन लोगों के बारे में जानना चाहिए जो सर्प-यज्ञ का रहस्य जानते थे।

Sauti said: I shall certainly tell you the names of those wise ones who became ritvijas and sadasya-s for the king.
सौति ने कहा: मैं तुम्हें उन बुद्धिमान लोगों के नाम अवश्य बताऊंगा जो राजा के लिए ऋत्विज और सदास्य बन गए।

इंद्र बहुत प्रसन्न हुए और उनसे कहा, "हे तक्षक! हे सांपों के राजा! आपको यहां सांप-यज्ञ से डरने की कोई जरूरत नहीं है।
For your sake, I have already pacified the grandfather. Therefore, you need not be afraid. Drive this fever away from your mind."
आपकी खातिर मैंने पहले ही दादाजी को मना लिया है. इसलिए आपको डरने की जरूरत नहीं है. इस बुखार को अपने दिमाग से दूर भगाओ।”
Thus being reassured, the supreme among the snakes happily lived in Śākra's palace.
इस प्रकार आश्वस्त होकर, साँपों में श्रेष्ठ व्यक्ति खुशी से शक्र के महल में रहने लगा।
But Vāsuki became extremely distressed on seeing that many snakes were continuously falling into the fire and only a few remained in his lineage.
लेकिन वासुकि यह देखकर अत्यंत व्यथित हो गए कि बहुत सारे सांप लगातार आग में गिर रहे थे और उनके वंश में केवल कुछ ही बचे थे।

दह्यन्तेऽङ्गानि मे भद्रे दिशो न प्रतिभान्ति च सीदामीव च संमोहाद्घूर्णतीव च मे मनः
"O fortunate one! My limbs are burning. I can no longer see the directions. I am about to fall because I have lost consciousness. My mind is whirling.
"हे भाग्यवान! मेरे अंग जल रहे हैं। मुझे अब दिशाएँ दिखाई नहीं दे रही हैं। मैं गिरने वाला हूँ क्योंकि मैं बेहोश हो गया हूँ। मेरा मन चक्कर खा रहा है।"
My sight is failing. My heart is about to burst. Completely numbed, I may fall into the blazing fire without resisting.
मेरी दृष्टि ख़राब हो रही है. मेरा दिल फटने को है. पूरी तरह स्तब्ध होकर, मैं बिना विरोध किए धधकती आग में गिर सकता हूँ।
Pārīkṣit's son's sacrifice will go on until he has exterminated our race. It is clear that I must also go to the land of the ancestors.
परीक्षित के पुत्र का बलिदान तब तक जारी रहेगा जब तक वह हमारी जाति को नष्ट नहीं कर देता। साफ है कि मुझे भी पुरखों की धरती पर जाना होगा.

अयं स कालः संप्राप्तो यदर्थमसि मे स्वसः जरत्कारोः पुरा दत्ता सा त्राह्यस्मान्सबान्धवान्
O sister! The time for which I gave you to Jaratkāru has come. O sister! Save us and our race.
हे बहन! वह समय आ गया है जिसके लिए मैंने तुम्हें जरत्कारु को दिया था। हे बहन! हमें और हमारी जाति को बचाएं.
O supreme among snakes! Āstīka will send the sacrifice that is being performed. In earlier times, the grandfather himself told me this.
हे साँपों में श्रेष्ठ! आस्तिक उस यज्ञ को भेजेगा जो किया जा रहा है। पहले तो दादाजी ने स्वयं मुझे यह बात बताई थी।
O sister! Therefore tell your beloved son, who is learned in the Veda-s and respected even by those who are aged, to save me and those who are dependant on me."
हे बहन! इसलिए अपने प्रिय पुत्र से, जो वेदों का विद्वान है और वृद्धों द्वारा भी सम्मान किया जाता है, मुझे और मुझ पर आश्रित लोगों को बचाने के लिए कहो।"
